WEDNESDAY HOMILY AFTER PENTECOST — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: LAW AS GUIDE

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

MATTHEW 5:17-19

He who throws away the manual shouldn’t complain when the machine breaks. Ignore God’s law, and life gets confusing fast. Whenever we buy new products, gadgets, or cars, they come with an instruction manual. These manuals tell us how to use them properly, avoid damage, and get the best results. In the same way, God’s law is our manual for living—a guide to joy, safety, and purpose.

Similarly, Divine laws are designed to serve as instruction manuals for us who are on the journey of life. They are road maps that lead us to our desired final destination, which is heaven. They are derived from the wisdom of God and are designed for those who love Him (1 Cor. 2:6-10). Jesus corrected a wrong impression that He came to abolish the law and the prophets. He said, “I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17).

This is to say that His teaching builds on the teaching of the law and the prophets. Besides, Jesus teaches us a positive way of looking at the laws of God with His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5). Also, He summarized the Ten Commandments into love of God and love of neighbour. The law of God is not a burden but a guide towards living a fruitful and blessed life. Do we obey the law out of love for God or fear of punishment?
