WEDNESDAY HOMILY AFTER THE PENTECOST — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: HE WAS A GOOD MAN!

Acts 11:21-26,13:1-3, Ps. 98:1-6, Matthew 5:17-19

I think one of the highest accolades that can be given to any leader whether in the secular or ecclesiastical realm is that ‘he was a good man’; beyond so many other attributes of good leadership such as – ‘he was a strong man’, ‘he was an intelligent man’ or ‘ he was a handsome man’. This is the accolade that Barnabas, our Saint of today received according to the 1st reading of today. When he came to that 1st Parish at Antioch, ‘he saw the grace of God and was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a GOOD MAN, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith’.

Now, that Parish or Church at Antioch had prophets (people who could speak the mind of God) and teachers (people who could make clear the Word of God). They were always worshipping in the Spirit, with prayer and fasting and the Holy Spirit continued to increase their number and their unity. Barnabas brought Paul as an Assistant Parish Priest (so to speak) and they were able to work together without jealousy and rancour. And people were observing all this. Finally it was at Antioch that believers were for the 1st time called ‘Christians’.

Jesus reminds us in today’s gospel that every Church must concentrate on preaching the gospel of the kingdom without charge. Every Church must heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers and cast out demons. We heal the sick everyday as we bring the Eucharist and the Word of consolation to them. We raise the dead when we bring back to spiritual life a lot of fallen Christians. We cast out demons when we systematically dethrone the structures of idol worship and wickedness in a community through the gospel of Christ. We cleanse lepers when we bring penitential believers who have committed mortal sins to the sacrament of reconciliation. We give without pay when we make our mission secondary schools as affordable as possible for the poor. May God give us leaders; bishops, governors, presidents, law makers, chief executives in government, Vice Chancellors in our Universities and teachers in our schools who are good men. May God bless you today as you endeavor to also make yourself a good man/woman!
