WEDNESDAY HOMILY FOR 15TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: GOD AND CHILDREN
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
An African proverb says, “If you fill your head with pride, you will lack space for wisdom.” Jesus praises humble people who are childlike. He exclaimed, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding (learned and clever) and revealed them to infants (mere children)” (Matthew 11:25).

Ordinarily, one would think that by mentioning the learned and clever, Jesus is referring to all intellectuals and scholars. Broadly speaking, the learned and clever people He refers to are those who claim to know everything and are no longer disposed to learn anything new. These are people who are spiritually arrogant and not humble enough to accept the humble and deep message of the gospel. Pride is indeed a capital sin. St. Augustine says, “It was pride that changed angels into devils, and it is humility that makes men as angels.” Mere children refer to humble people who are attracted to His gospel.
Noticeably, the people who always come close to Jesus are those who are disposed to learn and are willing to be dependent on the grace and spirit of God. The smartest, richest, very intelligent, religious, and civic leaders often think they are self-sufficient, and the gospel message makes little or no sense to them. “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).
