WEDNESDAY HOMILY OF 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS LIKE A TREASURE HIDDEN…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Jer 15:10, 16-21; Psalm 58(59):2-5, 10-11, 17-18; Matt 13:44-46
The two parables of great find, Treasure and Pearl, are brief but truly explosive. The joy of the finds, the exceedingly prompt and business-like action of the finders, and the worth or value of their finds recommend themselves for emulation by every disciple and persuade us to hold on to our faith in Christ at all cost. The kingdom of God, and Christ himself, the visible presence of God’s reign amongst us, are worth more than any other thing in life.

We have challenges and difficulties in life, but nothing is worth sacrificing our find for. Jesus did ask a question once: “what does it profit a person to gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul?” We must ask ourselves that question daily. All the things that make us put God aside sometimes are truly worth nothing and should not take the place of God. What we have found in Christ through our faith is worth giving up everything for, including our very livelihood and lives, in order to keep our find unto eternal life. Jesus also reminds in another text that it is in giving it all up (losing it) that we truly find life and our true selves. No matter what we suffer because of our Christian faith, we must firmly hold on to and never give up our precious treasure and pearl, Jesus. Jeremiah, in today’s first reading, details, once more, the indignity and cruelty he suffered because of his role as God’s messenger. The assurance given to him by God is ours as well. The Lord says:
“I will make you a bronze wall fortified against this people. They will fight against you but they will not overcome you because I am with you to save you and to deliver you—it is the Lord who speaks. I mean to deliver you from the hands of the wicked and redeem you from the clutches of the violent.” Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
