WEDNESDAY HOMILY OF 29TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: KNOWING WHAT THE MASTER WANTS!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Eph 3:2-12; Psalm (Isaiah 12); Luke 12:39-48
As a mass server back in the day, one picture I could never understand was that of priests insulting people from the pulpit, or knocking and slapping catechists and mass servers on the sanctuary. Jesus says the master will come at an hour we do not expect. We should spend the precious time we have getting prepared; not beating up and maltreating those God has given us, because we feel we’re more privileged. When a man has had a great deal given him, even more will be expected of him.

Friends, service is never about the self. God wants us to genuinely serve others. That’s what St Paul tells us to do, having been given the grace to understand the mystery that pagans now share in the same inheritance as the Jews. The Mystery that Jesus Christ is Lord of the Universe. We must understand that in Christ Jesus, the priest isn’t higher than the people he’s called to lead. The bishop isn’t higher than his priests; and the Pope is certainly not higher than the Bishops. Leadership in the Church cannot make sense except in the context of service. If we continue to abuse the power God has given us, we shall receive strokes too numerous to be counted.
God bless your day ahead
