HOMILY THEME: OBEDIENCE IS THE ANSWER

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY: (Jn. 18:1-19:42) Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion

In today’s Gospel we have the account of the passion and death of the Lord Jesus. It was an excruciating, dreadful, and shameful death. It was one you cannot imagine to be inflicted on God much more voluntarily experience it. Yet, Jesus, in total obedience to the will of the Father, went through it.

We remember a similar experience of old. Then, it was a father being tested by God to offer his son. Abraham was asked by God to offer his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. It was a difficult request. Yet, in full trust to the Father, he obeyed to sacrifice his son. But at the last moment, God stopped Abraham.

This time, there is no stopping the death of Jesus. He will go through death as a ransom for all. At stake was the salvation of all and God chose the best person, His only Son our Lord Jesus Christ.

His mother must have taught Him obedience. Mary herself was a model. Remember when she was told that she will be the Mother of the Son of God. Against all odds, she said yes in obedience to the Father’s will. JOSEPH, too, his stepfather was an exemplar of obedience. A message from an angel made him change his mind and submitted himself to God’s economy of salvation.

Obedience is the name of the game in our relationship to God. It entails forgetting oneself, total submission, and faith in Jesus. Jesus is the way. His way is obedience. If you are wondering how JESUS could go through death? Obedience is the answer. If you want to follow the way of Jesus, obedience is the answer.
