HOMILY THEME: THE WORLD CRAVES FOR SHEPHERDS LIKE CHRIST

BY: Rev. Fr. Jacob Aondover ATSU

HOMILY: READINGS: ACTS 2:14a.36-41, PSALM 23, 1PETER 2:20-25, JOHN 10:1-10

Someone is GOOD if he/she has the required qualities of a high moral standard. When someone is approved of, righteous and impeccable in character, he/she can be said to be Good.

A SHEPHERD is one who guides and directs or tends those under his/her charge rightly. A Good Shepherd is wise, bold, untiringly commited to the well-being of his/her flock. All leaders, Spiritual and secular, ought to be Good Shepherds. Our priests, pastors, imams, traditional and political rulers are ordinarily meant to be Good Shepherds as mentored by Christ. It’s rather unfortunate that our contemporary society lacks shepherds more so, Good Shepherds.

On this day, we remind ourselves of the paternal care of God, how much he loves us and PROVIDENTIALLY ABIDES WITH US. He is our shepherd hence none of our good desires can elude us (Ps. 23:1). Today too, we remind ourselves of some of the wonderful attributes of God:
åhe guides, caters and protects his own.
åHe does not forsake his own (Ps. 94:14) because he is not a hired servant who works for pay.
åHe, our God readily forgives anyone who listens to his disciples, repents of his/her wrongs and is converted to him (Acts 2:38). åBeing the good shepherd and loving guide that he is, he took shame, pain, ridicule and insults pursuant to our saving so that through his wounds, we may be saved (1Pet.2:24).

Dearly beloved, on this day too may I remind us that Christ knows our human struggles and bitterness and is willing to soothe our pains. He is ready to revive our broken souls, our crushed spirits, our weary knees, and breath life into the failed projects of our lives. Indeed, he is ever ready to grant peace to the troubled souls. He will surely restore his creation at the appointed time and save us from the deadening effects of covid-19.

Today is a call for GOOD LEADERSHIP, leadership mentored by Christ, leadership where those who lead are shepherds and not bosses. Our contemporary society needs shepherds who are ready as Pope Francis would say to SMELL LIKE THEIR SHEEP, to PERCEIVE THE ORDOUR OF THEIR FLOCK. That so, they’d be imitating Christ the good shepherd hence follow his way. May our religious, traditional and political leaders so informed by Christ, lead us selflessly unto the haven we desire where the pastures are evergreen and waters never dry. May Christ the ultimate Shepherd guide us into the heavenly path where the pastures are eternal. Amen.

HELP THE NEEDY and be blessed…
