We celebrate John an apostle, evangelist, ardent lover and believer in the life and mission of Christ. He lived, taught and preached loved. We may want to emulate him hence make the world better and homely for all.

He was first to believe upon seeing the empty tomb (Jn. 20:8); and was first to recognize Jesus when he appeared to the apostles on the shores of Galilee. Having been found worthy, he was chosen to remain with the Christian community for a protracted number of years nursing their faith and witnessing to God’s love. John then traveled to Samaria and many parts of Asia Minor where from Ephesus, the center; he founded “the Seven Churches”. At Ephesus also, he wrote what has been rightly termed, the “Spiritual Gospel”. Due to the sublimity of his writings, John was often termed the Divine, i.e., the “Theologian”. Given his courage and fearlessness, he is depicted with the symbol of the ‘eagle that soars unafraid towards the sun’.

John is the apostle of love and an ardent believer in the mutual coexistence and making manifest the joy of Christ. This is manifest in his zeal and tender solicitude for his flock; little wonder we often hear him: “Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth” (1Jn. 3:18). “Children, let us love one another for love is of God”; “If you do not love your brother whom you see, how can you love God whom you cannot see”? “He who has love has the lie of God in him. God is love!” (1Jn. 4:8). We are called to imitate this prince of heaven today by leading courageous lives, preaching and leading lives of love; fostering and sustaining the faith handed to us wherever we find ourselves and so on.

My dearest, if God has so loved us, we also ought to love one another (1Jn. 4:11); only then, would the world be a place habitable for all.
