YEAR A: HOMILY/REFLECTION FOR SATURDAY OF 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
HOMILY THEME: God’s promise of restoration and the lifestyle of a disciple.
BY: Fr. Francis Onwunali
HOMILY: On this first Saturday in this month of July, as we honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of our Saviour, the readings present to us God’s promise of restoration and the lifestyle of a disciple.
In the first reading (Amos 9: 11-15), Amos after his prophecies of doom is giving hope for restoration as the Chosen People turns to God. He reminds them that God will renew God’s divine promises as they renew their relationship with God. “I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them…”. Am I willing to renew my relationship with God so as to have my glory in God restored?
In the gospel (Matt. 9: 14-17), Jesus in response to John’s disciples’ question on fasting, balances the lifestyle of a disciple as involving both fasting and feasting. When we are living the life of grace in Jesus Christ, rejoicing and gladness envelope our soul; but whenever we fall short of God’s grace through sin, we have to seek the face of God for reconciliation, restoration and peace.
Dear friends, dishonesty breeds discomfort in our lives through vicious circle of lies and cover-ups. Such a life knows no inner peace. As true disciples of Christ, we are called to live a life of grace to enjoy the freedom of the Children of God.
I pray as we journey in life today, we will learn to acknowledge our weaknesses and seek the face of Jesus, Who, as the bridegroom, enlightens the way for us. May we continue to walk in the presence of the Lord with joy and fulfilment, and may the divine promises of restoration be fulfilled in us.
Have a restoration-full day!
