22ND SUNDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR A)

HOMILY THEME: HUMILITY

BY: Fr. Ronnie Urbano, SDB.

HOMILY: Lk 14:1.7-14
HUMILITY comes from the Latin word “humus” which means soil or “lupa” (Tagalog). The soil is considered nothing as it is merely stepped on underfoot. Man comes from dust — from nothing and will return back to dust. “Nagmula sa lupa, magbabalik ng kusa.”

Obviously, from our readings today, the Liturgical theme of the Mass is about humility – not thinking of oneself as better than the others. “For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Each of us is gifted with something that we can pride ourselves with. Some are intelligent, others are talented, while others are well-off, good-looking, powerful, having caring family, professional, educated, etc. Because of these, some have become so consumed by his/her own public image. But these cannot be reasons to make one above himself and boastful. “When you are invited, go and take the lowest place.” The real reason for this is because we own nothing, even our very dear life. We are but mere stewards of God’s every great gift.

On the other hand, it is also false humility not to recognize one’s giftedness. We become “something” because of God’s grace. But the value of humility is when this giftedness is expressed in generosity and service to others, especially to those at the peripheries of society. “When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.” Generosity and service — acts of emptying oneself and returning back to nothing, are best expressions of true humility.
