YEAR A: HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: THE LAMB OF GOD

BY: Fr. Cyril Unachukwu CCE

HOMILY: Being of the stuck of Adam and Eve, we are naturally held back by the clutches through which the devil damaged the relationship between us and God in our original state of grace and innocence in the Garden of Eden. Unfortunately, Men and women are grossly incapable of saving themselves from this dungeon and captivity of the evil one. It is only through Christ that we are saved and receive the grace and power to be and live as children of God. By the merits of Christ the New Man and the New Adam, we become new creatures empowered to renew the face of the earth by the potencies of Christ in us. May Christ be reflected in all our dealings and endeavours; Amen.

The Gospel Reading of today (John 1:29-34) brings us to reflect on the meaning and content of the witness of John the Baptist about our Lord Jesus Christ. In the words of John, “look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.” In other words, behold the Saviour of the world; He who raises fallen humanity back to its status of grace and reconciles us with the Father. It is only through Him that we receive the Holy Spirit and the power to become witnesses. It is only through Him that we are saved! There is often the human tendency to feel secure and safe because of the presence of certain material or earthly things. It could be as a result of surplus money and wealth, family ties and connections, academic qualifications and discoveries, etc. It is true that these things may add value to the quality of life one could be living but none of these can save. Salvation comes only through Jesus Christ because He is the one and true spotless Lamb containing all the spiritual requisites to be offered to God for our sake and for the sake of our salvation. John the Baptist is inviting us to look up and behold! Whoever wants to be saved must behold the Lamb of God! To behold the Lamb is to recognise His place in your life! To behold the Lamb is to profess Him to be the only Saviour of the world! To behold the Lamb is to profess Him as your personal Saviour! To behold the Lamb is to embrace and be a prolongation of His presence in the world through words and deeds! To behold the Lamb is to witness to His Gospel and to declare like John the Baptist “yes, I have seen and I am the witness that He is the Chosen One of God.”

This profession of faith is the content of the whole work of evangelisation; that Jesus is the Christ; He is the Saviour of the world! This was the content of the witnessing of the whole of the apostles of Christ. Saint Paul, preaching this same Good news to the Corinthians in the Second Reading of today (I Cor 1:1-3), reminded us that Jesus is the Lord of all. Only in adherence to this can the prophecy of the First Reading (Is 49:3, 5-6) be fulfilled in each and every one of us; “I will make you the light of the nations so that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” Christ is the Light of the world and in Him we are ignited and enlightened to bring the rays of His Light to all corners of the earth. This is our unique mission as sons and daughters of God reborn in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit; to make Christ known, to enthrone the reign of God and to make the presence of the Holy Spirit felt by all. Our salvation depends greatly on our faithfulness to this mission and our openness to bear witness to Christ in words and deeds. Like Jesus, the Christ and the Emmanuel, we must brave-up daily to pray with the words of the psalmist, “here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.”

May the salvific power of Christ be constantly manifest in us so that through its effects in our lives many more of our brothers and sisters may behold and desire and decide and come to join the boat of the saved; Amen.
