YEAR A: Homily for the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

HOMILY THEME: THE EUCHARISTIC BANQUET!

BY: Fr. Ben Agbo

HOMILY: Judges 11 : 29 – 39, Mt 22 : 1 – 14.
The Eucharistic banquet is the foretaste of our heavenly banquet. Universal as this invitation is for all, it also places a disciplinary demand on us : We must be in a perfect STATE OF GRACE. Yes, we are all guests at the banquet of salvation. But being guests implies responsibility on our part. We need to wear the wedding garment of purity and fidelity to God’s Word. We need to be obedient to the Church authorities. We need to conform with the requirements of fellowship among our Christian brethren. We need to be wedded in the Church before raising children and teach our children to do so otherwise we may be accomplices to the same offence. If it is a mortal sin to receive holy communion when you raise children without wedding, then it is also a mortal sin to support your children to do the same. This support can be observed in so many ways. One of it is by accepting the marital processes that take your daughter away without wedding and going for ‘Omugo’ ( maternity visit) when she has put to bed.

Many now think that the kingdom of heaven is so cheap and free and do no longer bother about clothing themselves with the wedding garment of purity. The best wedding garment is the one worn by our blessed mother Mary with the spiritual disposition ‘Here I am, Lord ; I come to do your will’. We may not need to suffocate ourselves with hard and harsh vows like Jephthah did, but we must try and keep whatever little marital or celibate vows we have made to the Lord. God keeps his covenants ever in mind. His invitation remains universal and he hates spiritual apathy – uninterested invitees who claim to be Christians but are not ready to fulfill the simple demands of Eucharistic purity. May God bless you today!
