YEAR A: HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE 1ST WEEK OF LENT

HOMILY THEME: praying right

BY: Fr. Joseph Nyarko Asare,

HOMILY: Esther 14:1, 3-4, 11, 13-14/Psalm 138:1-3, 7-8/ Matthew 7:7-14

God waits to rescue. He permits our expression of freedom as He waits to intervene whenever we call in our innocence. Esther teaches us how to pray well.

Prayer is about surrendering, trusting and asking. We surrender physically with our gestures and spiritually with our attitude. Esther and her maids lay on the ground all day to express the inner attitude of surrender.

In asking, she was very direct. She didn’t multiply words but stated, in simple terms, her wishes, desires and interest. She knew what she wanted and didn’t waste time expressing them. She trusted both in her knowledge of history and her confidence in Divine capacity. She knew God was capable before she entered the presence of God.

Frankly, many enter into prayer without trust. This prevents the possibility of deeper responses from God. It is told in the Gospel that Jesus could not perform many mighty works in His hometown because they didn’t believe in Him.

As we grow in trust, something which in itself is the fruit of daily prayer, we will enjoy more from God and more of Him.

PRAYER POINTS
