HOMILY THEME:  SEEK TO DO GOOD ALWAYS

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY: (Mk. 9:41-50) Thursday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus stressed that the smallest deed when done out of faith matters great before the Lord. Similarly, if we avoid even the smallest sins, reaffirm our faith in God. Jesus even went as far as saying that whatever causes us to sin, we must be ready to remove or do way with if only to preserve ourselves from sinning. Thus, Jesus wanted us to address Christian life both ways – omission and commission. Omission of any evil acts and commission of even the smallest deed.

Maybe to most of us, a small deed does not matter much to many. But definitely not to God. When the deed, no matter how small is done out of love for God and neighbor, they do bring us in God’s favour. God knows that a small good deed, when done regularly, forms the person. Big things come from small things. Thus, we must make sure that we never miss doing even small acts. And when possible, let us go all out to always do good whether materially or spiritually. Small good acts like sharing food, appreciation, thanking, smiling, greeting, etc. certainly create a better atmosphere among people. We should commit ourselves to do good and be agents of peace to people.

At the same time, let us also be aware of omitting doing evil deeds and encouraging others to do the same. Not only should we flood the world with good deeds, we must also eradicate the proliferation of evil deeds. The battle would be easy if evil is always visible and exposed. The fact is, it is subtle and disguised at times. Christians must not be complacent. The devil wants us to leave our guards. And if we do, lo and behold, we were had. Avoid every lie of whatever color. Resist lust and all forms of immoralities. Strive not to be easily lured by riches, power, or fame.

Suffering and comfort may not be always evil and good respectively. There are times when we need to suffer. And there are times when good is not enough because better is available. The devil will not stop if we have resisted the temptation. it will tempt us to settle for less. When we do, we committed lukewarmness which is still unholy.

Be holy not only because God is holy but because holiness is our destiny. We acquired it by virtue of being created by God and separated as those created in His image and likeness. To be holy is a regular state for us. We were not created sinful from the beginning. Sin came because of disobedience to God. After that, we were never the same. But it did not condemn us to sin. As human beings, we have the capacity to do good and avoid evil. Even our bodies react well to good and are uncomfortable with evil. Let us listen to our conscience. God speaks to us through it. Always seek to do good and never let any opportunity to pass. In the same breath, avoid all evil at all cost.
