YEAR A: HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME Intention for the Day: Prayer that we may always be on the good side of God and never at his wrong side. Amen. BY: Fr. Cyril Akindele Osadare   HOMILY: Readings: Exodus 14:21—15:1; John 14:23 Every society rewards loyalty. It’s just natural that if you keep the interests and laws of a particular system, the system keeps you and if you refuse to keep that law or attack that system, you set up yourself automatically as an enemy against that system and that system automatically would want to protect itself and attack it’s enemies. It’s like a body of water. It has its natural course, it flows towards a particular direction and everyone who is in line, the water protects and enjoys it but anyone swimming against its tide is setting itself for a battle and sooner or later such an individual is bound to regret his actions somehow. Our readings of today talks about reward for being loyal and following the direction of God. In the first reading, God destroyed the Egyptians and their war ships and horses because they set up themselves as enemies of God for trying to block off his way of saving his people. This is exactly what Jesus meant by mother, brother and sisters. Those who are loyal, doing his will, supporting his project and not trying to distract or destroy his plans are his favourites. My dear friends, we have seen people talk of favourite of a father or mother. This is normal because the child that is loyal, obedient and supportive would automatically become the favourite one not the one who doesn’t care or set himself as an enemy by trying to bring down what is being done. It is sin that makes us enemies of God, if only we would leave sin, we would become friends of God but as long as we refused to support God’s project, we are setting up ourselves for its consequences. Remember God is a mountain and no-one can attack him and survive. He is like a moving train, you either get inside, or go along but you can’t stand on its way else one would get crushed. May the Lord give us the grace to be true friends, loyal and family supporting God’s project. Amen.
