HOMILY THEME: WHO IS A LEADER?

BY: Fr. Ben Agbo

HOMILY: Deut 31 : 1 – 8, Matt 18 : 1 – 14.
A leader is not only the one who knows the way but who can make others follow. A leader is not only the one who can make others follow but who will lead them to the right destination setting his/ her own life as example. Finally a good leader should endeavour to have a good successor since success without a successor is already half failure. In Moses, we find all these qualities of a good leader ; He had the vision and the burden to save his people. God prepared him with virtues of meekness and humility, Num 12 ; 1 to be able to make the Israelites follow him. In today’s 1st reading he tells Joshua to be courageous to be able to take over the baton of leadership.

Jesus tells us in today’s gospel that a Christian leader must be as innocent and trustful on God as a child trusts his parents. He must continue to look up to God in every situation and not lose hope. He must search for his straying flock like a Shepherd and not be insensitive about them. As priests, religious, Christian parents, teachers, etc, the call for good Christian leadership remains urgent. Let us never disappoint our Lord Jesus in this important aspect of our Christian life.

May God bless you today.
