YEAR A: HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
HOMILY THEME: BE PREPARED ALWAYS
BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon
HOMILY: (Lk. 12:35-38) Tuesday of the Twenty Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us what to do and what will happen when He comes again. It was a revelation of His mission at the same time a warning to His followers. Like servants awaiting the arrival of their master, Jesus would come back at anytime. Thus, it is best to be vigilant. Be prepared to welcome the Lord at all times.
Was Jesus playing a game of hide and seek with us? Why not reveal the specific time when He will be coming? Why present the parousia like a sword of Damocles ready to cut our head when we are not ready? Our common attitude towards exams gives part of the answer. We have the tendency to cram. We only prepare when exams are near. It is also prevailing in our other activities. In the process, we fail to appreciate and obtain the merits of what we do. Our goal has become merely to meet the minimum or pass. Exams are meant not only to measure our capacity but also to see if we have captured its essence.
This becomes more telling when we deal with the second coming. The significance of the second coming is to be worthy when it comes. Worthiness is holiness. Holiness is not attained overnight. It is a result of constant struggle against sin. At times we fail but we try to be sorry we had committed them and learn from them. Holiness must be a way of life. If we merely consider it as a deadline to meet, we had missed its significance. We will fail. The serious CHRISTIAN is not worried or concerned about the second coming. We know it will come. Meantime, we take advantage of our time to live in accordance with God’s will. We are more concerned about being a true believer and living a holy life. Thus, wherever and whenever the second coming comes, we will be prepared.
If, for example, Jesus will come in the next hour, what will you do? If you are prepared, you will not worry about what to do because it is presumed you are already doing what you are supposed to do. No panic. No anxiety. No rush. You will be seen doing you are expected to do.
