HOMILY THEME: TOGETHER WE CAN; RIVERS DON’T DRINK THEIR WATER

BY: Rev. Fr. Jacob Aondover ATSU

HOMILY: READINGS: ACTS 4:32-37, PSALM 93, JOHN 3:7-15

• Build bridges enhancing brother/sisterliness
• Help ourselves grow and cater for each other
• Heal the wounded, mend the broken, comfort the sorrowing, etc.
• Make Christ more visible to the world

Where is that nation, state, community, sect, etc. that grows or develops amidst division and raging dissensions? Is there any Church or association that even functions well talk less of progressing if there is no unity and harmonious coexistence? Besides bad leadership and corruption, one other major bane to the national growth of Nigeria and most of the underdeveloped countries of the world is DISUNITY. Today therefore is a call for us all to be of ‘One Heart and Soul’ not just as Christians but as citizens of this or that country.

Beloved friends in Christ, it has always been Jesus’ intention that we be ONE (Jn. 17:21). He came to save all men and women especially those who believe in him. His message of salvation spread through all the earth and his early followers fostered Jesus’ intention; “The company of those who believed were of one heart and soul…” (ACTS 4:32). They teach us today to emulate them and enjoy the ensuing fruits of UNITY and harmonious living.

There’s no gainsaying that where there is unity of purpose, PEACE reigns. There are no wars, no unruly and unhealthy cum violent disagreements; indeed, there is serenity! Communities that live together in unity grow rather at an accelerating rate for there’s nobody or nothing standing in their way of progress. Of course beloved of God, where unity prevails, external aggression/aggressors don’t easily penetrate. They are always secure and ready to ward off any attack from whatever angle. Moreover, wherever unity finds a home, love can never be absent and wherever love is present, joy, happiness, fairness, equality and humble service are prevalent. This indeed is an ideal community where, the poor forget they are poor and the rich count themselves on par with all others.

Beloved friends in Christ, what are those factors that divide us?
• What is more than our common sonship and common destination – heaven?
• Whose breath of life is different or more than any other human?
• Why are we allowing selfishness, varying opinions, tribal sentiments, hate etc. to tear us apart hence leave us backward and in disarray?
• We may learn today to live for others as the early Christians did, for nothing in nature actually lives for itself.
• Rivers don’t drink their water, trees don’t eat their fruits, the sun doesn’t shine for itself and so on.
• Living for others is nature’s very rule! We are all born and graced to help each other.
Unity of purpose, believe in Jesus through our spiritual rebirth are needful elements for us who wish to lead kind and altruistic lives. For this grace we pray through Christ our Lord…
