YEAR A: HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF LENT

HOMILY: (Mt.1:16-24) Tuesday of the Second Week of Lent, Day Fourteen (14) of Lent, Feast of St. Joseph
In today’s Gospel we have the account of how Joseph came to the decision to stand as husband to MARY and earthly father to JESUS.
He was told by an angel in a dream that she should take MARY as his wife even though she was already pregnant of JESUS, the Messiah, by the Holy Spirit. As a result, the promise that the Messiah will be a descendant of DAVID, as was told in the first reading, was fulfilled.
JOSEPH went on to fulfill his responsibility both as a husband and a father. He supported his family and reared JESUS to be a good child and a good Jew. Children were entrusted to their parents by God. Parents do not own them. They could not just do what they want for their children.
This was a misinterpretation of so many with regards to children. We believe that children were God’s gifts. Thus, their lives must be patterned after God’s will. At baptism, the priest asked parents and Godparents if they promise to rear their children according to the life of Christ. God expects them to form children knowing, loving, and serving God. They must not only be good citizens of the country but good children of God too.
St. JOSEPH is a good model for fathers. He was told who his Son was and what are God’s plan for Him. Together with Mary, they cooperated in making JESUS fulfill His mission. It was a painful life for JESUS, especially His death. But more than their pain, God’s will is more important. Thus, even if they did not fully understood JESUS and God’s will, they followed it.
Let us pray for all fathers. May they come to know St. JOSEPH, the patron of all fathers. May they imbibe his being just, humble, and hardworking for his family. Fathers are role models. Children look up to them. May all fathers be witnesses of the faith to their children.
