HOMILY THEME: TEST OF FAITHFULNESS

HOMILY: (Mk. 10:28-31) Tuesday of the Eight Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells His disciples to be detached from everything and everyone. It is the ultimate test of one’s faithfulness to the Lord. Jesus knew the lure of the world. It is man’s weakness to acquire in the world as much as he can. Relationships are even a great need. And most of all, one’s life.

All the above comes from the need to be first, to be at the top, to be the best, to be popular and powerful. In that quest, God is forgotten. Or, God becomes a support but not the anchor. Jesus gives an important reminder. All relationships and acquisitions should come second. All of them are fleeting. They do not last. When we believe that life is eternal, we aim for what is eternal. And Jesus is eternal.

In the kingdom, those who believe in God comes first. Those who give importance to possessions will find it hard to even knock at the Kingdom. Jesus gives a guarantee. Seek first the Kingdom and all will be given besides. We remember the man with a lot of possessions who even had followed the commandments. All Jesus wanted was for him to sell everything, follow Jesus, and he will gain eternal life. He chose his vast possessions more than Jesus. He went away sad. Am sure Jesus was more sad.

That was him. We can be different We should be different. Choose Jesus.
