HOMILY THEME: THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

HOMILY: (Lk. 24:13-35) Wednesday in the Octave of Easter

In today’s Gospel two disciples are going back home frustrated and depressed after witnessing the crucifixion and death of their Master Jesus Christ. They had hoped He would be the Messiah they were waiting for. But His death shattered their hopes. Jesus appeared before them unrecognized. Yet, He tried to explain to them what Scriptures said about Himself. Finally, Jesus was recognized in the breaking of the bread. They added that Jesus’s words made their hearts burn while they were walking.

This resurrection scene says a lot about the relationship of the Word of God and the breaking of bread. Jesus’ retelling the Scriptures, in a way, prepared the disciples for the breaking of bread which paved the way for the recognition of Jesus risen.

At present, we have the perfect set up in the mass. First part is the Liturgy of the Word. It is followed by the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the breaking of bread. This, if the Eucharist will be meaningful and fruitful, we ought to listen intently in the Word. Hopefully, like the disciples, our hearts will be touched. Then, we will be perfectly prepared to receive the Lord in the Eucharist.

Do we recognize the Lord in the breaking of bread? Do we listen to the Word of God so as to assimilate the it’s full import and be disposed for the Eucharist? Are we prepared to receive Jesus risen both in His Word and Deed?
