HOMILY THEME: ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Lk.1:5-25) Wednesday of the Third Week of Advent, Fourth Day of Simbang Gabi

In today’s Gospel, spot is on Zechariah on the occasion of the circumstances before the birth of John the Baptist. Zechariah was shocked at the news by the angel that he and his wife Elizabeth will be given a son. Though it was an answered prayer, Zechariah thought that it was too late since both of them were too old. Because he doubted, God, through the angel, rendered him deaf and mute and will only be freed from it on John’s birth.

It is a lesson on following God’s Will. In many ways and occasions, we forget that God is God and we are His creatures. We are limited and God is omnipotent. We always commit the mistake of seeing Him as like us and is governed by what governs us. Nothing is impossible with God. That includes everything that are humanly impossible. When we kneel and pray, we try to dictate on God. What we want is what He should give. We forget His will which is more important. Some are too hard headed that God will even grant what they want for them to see that it is not what they should ask.

To know God’s will required knowing Him. The more we know Him, the better we know His will. A wife knows best the color and design of necktie her husband would want. Even if the husband had not seen it yet, the wife, because she knows her husband well, is certain her husband will like it. If this is true with human relations, it is more true with God. Knowing Him makes us know His will too.

Mothers know best. God knows better than the best mothers. God is the author of life. Even if we had not utter any word, He already knows what we need. But He will not give it to us against our will. Our task is to discern His will and make it also our will. That moment of unity of wills is a moment of grace and salvation. May we be always humble and submit our whole being to God’s will. Let us pray with St. Ignatius :

“Take and receive, O Lord, my liberty Take all my will, my mind, my memory All things I hold and all I own are Thine Thine was the gift, to Thee I all resign Do Thou direct and govern all and sway Do what Thou wilt, command, and I obey Only Thy grace, Thy love on me bestow.”
