HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 6TH WEEK OF EASTER

HOMILY THEME: SPIRIT OF TRUTH

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY: (Jn. 16:12-15) Wednesday of the Sixth Sunday of Easter

In today’s Gospel Jesus honestly told His disciples that there are still a lot to know and the disciples were incapable of knowing them. Precisely, the Spirit of Truth, the one who will be sent by the Father will fill in that need to help the disciples know and understand the Good News.
The truth that is JESUS is much to much for us. Jesus told His message as simple as possible. He made use of everyday circumstances and used common things in order to drive home His messages. Yet, not everything can be grasp by the human mind. Our minds are limited compared to the truth. We need the assistance of God. The Holy Spirit will guide us through it and help us grasp the message.

A good analogy will be the common exchange between a parent and a child. Children, who are usually curious about things around them, ask their parents a lot of questions. Parents would try responding to the questions as best as they can in the way the children would understand. But the point comes when even the best and graphic answer could not be grasped by the children. This is because the answer is just too much or beyond the capacity of the children. The same with our relationship with God. The truth and messages of God, and God Himself, is just too much for us. In fact, even if we are capable of that rare feat of using fully our intelligence, we will still fall short. It is in this situation that the Holy Spirit is relevant to us. The Holy Spirit guides, enlightens, and helps us understand God’s revelation.

This tells us that we must be humble. We cannot be all-knowing before the Lord no matter how intelligent we are. For, in truth, the truth is larger than what our minds can understand even if we are able to use it 100 percent. At the same time, it makes us aware of our being creatures. The Creator is much much greater than His creatures. We cannot be independent of God. We rely on Him and should always be connected with Him.

Openness should always be our disposition before he Lord. When we are open, we welcome a lot of things. When we are open to God, a lot that is divine will enter us. The Holy Spirit will help us be open. Openness to God means being humble.
