YEAR B: HOMILY FOR 16TH TUESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

YEAR B: HOMILY FOR 16TH TUESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
HOMILY THEME: GOD BEFORE BLOOD!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Micah 7:14-15,18-20, Ps. 85:2-8, Matthew 12:46-50
If your Father were a good President of a country, you’ll expect to be able to see him anytime, right? But you might soon come to realise that his position would make him consider country before family most times. So when he misses meal times, recreational times, and rushes off to work just after waking up in the morning, you’ll try to understand. Today, Jesus corrects a Jewish impression. He makes it clear to the man who came to tell him that his mother and his brothers were longing to see him outside, that divine ties came before blood ties.

Friends, this is a hard one to swallow. How am I supposed to see sister A or brother B, as more of a sibling to me than my own blood siblings? But here’s the thing! That we’re first sons and daughters of God, and heirs of the Father, before we’re blood related, need not reduce, but ENHANCE our filial relationships. Jesus does not disrespect his biological family; he rather uses the opportunity to deepen our understanding of what family should be. When we strive to live right and do God’s will, we become even more than blood relatives of Jesus and of one another. Let us pray with the Prophet Micah, that God may have mercy on us and forgive us for the times we’ve put our selfish interests before God’s, Amen.
Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
