HOMILY THEME: WHO WE SHOULD FEAR MOST

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Lk. 12:1-7) Friday of the Twenty Eight Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus gives a stern admonition to the crowd against the pharisees and which or who they should fear most. While, predominantly, we fear more those who can hurt us physically, emotionally, and psychologically, Jesus reminds us that the one who can hurt us spiritually should be feared most because it lasts beyond our life on earth. In other words, salvation should be our foremost concern. What does it profit us if we gain freedom from earthly pains but suffer everlasting damnation?

In this sense, we now can understand martyrs. How come they were willing to endure pain and death for the faith? Why were they willing to suffer and die rather than commit apostasy? It is because of their fear of suffering spiritually. It is because they would rather die physically rather than suffer eternal death. It is because of their love for the Lord who they would want to be with than live without Him.

We continually lose in this compromise. We compromise our relationship with God with gaining material things. This is exemplified when we commit corruption, deception, stealing, immoralities, fraud, etc. When we sin, we express more our fear of material rather than spiritual pain. No doubt it is a reasonable pain but not enough reason to suffer an everlasting pain like risking our salvation.

This way, Christianity is worth all the pain in order to be constantly faithful. It is more of fearing being separated from God than suffering from the pains of damnation. Indeed, we must dread losing eternal life than being thrown to eternal death.
