HOMILY THEME: FOR THE SPIRIT OF YOUR FATHER WILL SPEAK THROUGH YOU

HOMILY:

(Mt. 10:16-23) Friday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells His apostles the difficulties they will encounter in their mission to proclaim the Good News. The apostles were being sent at a time when local and religious leaders, including relatives who were ridiculing Jesus. In order to respond to these persecutions Jesus warned His apostles and motivated them by giving them His full support. He even told them the guidance of the Spirit amidst confusion and threats.

Jesus will lead the way in going through a lot of hindrances, pains, and suffering in proclaiming the Good News. The apostles would later see Jesus experience the very words He warned them of. Meantime, Jesus was summoning their faith and trust in Him. The task they had been called to was not a walk in the park. Only their faith can and will see them through.

It would have been ideal if Jesus’s words will be immediately accepted and lived. But many disagree with Him. His teachings were very radical but effective. They touched everyone’s life but too hard for comfort. They seem new but actually an authentic application of the original. Finally, He teaches to be ready to lose everything when in fact it will gain everything.
