YEAR B: HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME. MEMORIAL OF ST. MONICA

HOMILY THEME: THE EXTERNAL OBSERVER

BY: Rev Fr Joseph Nyarko Asare

HOMILY:

(2Thess 1:1-5,11-12/Ps 96:1-5/Mt 23:13-22)

We could be righteous in our own eyes without being right with God. The only verdict which is permanent is the verdict of God. When He acquits, no one condemns and vice versa. Jesus condemns the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy. They see themselves as righteous but are merely receiving themselves. Their biggest danger is that they refused to admit the admonition of Jesus. Their pride prevented them from admitting the truth and repenting.

We are prone to self righteousness because of our ego and pride. But life is never about what I think I am. What is crucial is what God thinks about me. We do ourselves the greatest good when we learn to listen to God’s inner promptings and act accordingly. May we be granted the humility to do that.

PRAYER POINTS

~For humility and openness to correction

~That we will admit truth with sincerity without arguing

~For the courage to do the will of God
