HOMILY THEME: IF ANYONE STRIKES YOU ON THE  RIGHT CHEEK, TURN TO HIM THE OTHER ALSO…

HOMILY:

(Mt. 5:38-42) Monday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

In the day’s Gospel (6/15/15) Jesus puts into proper perspective the old dictum, “ An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” We are asked to go to the limit in being charitable. This radical charity places a Christian to utter disregard of self to a concern for the escalation of violence. The Christian does not get even. Instead, the Christian forgives and extends a helping hand almost without limit.

The Lord Jesus saw the futility of the law to attain peace. Vengeance always ache to be unleashed. As a result, physical and psychological harms are inflicted on the individuals concerned. Jesus gave an example on how to deal with extreme violence. He extended His arms and died on the cross. He was without sin, yet He still showed mercy and compassion. This is a hard teaching to follow. But because it came from God, it must be good. Besides, as mentioned above, it puts everything to a halt.

Everyone involved ceases from dealing more harm to anyone. To some, this attitude may be stupid and irregular. But God knows better. Jesus was tasked to communicate this important truth. Let us further reflect on this gem of truth from God. Peacemakers and peace seekers should seriously take this into consideration.
