HOMILY THEME: LIVE BY EXAMPLE

HOMILY:

(Lk.8:14-15) Saturday of the Twenty Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells His listeners His true relations. They are those who listen to the Word of God and act on it. Relationship with God is determined not just in being called and recognized as one but in hearing and living the Word. For, indeed, what good are titles, memberships, certificates, and other recognitions if they do not affect and inspire our lives. “Do what I say, not what I do” This is half good. What may have been said was good. But it seeks witnessing. Doing something against what was said is a counter testimony to the word. Usually, we are more influenced by example than by instructions. In many cases, what were seen were the ones being imitated.

Jesus is the prime model to this. He Himself is the Word of God made flesh. He lived every word He promised and taught. Not only did the Word of God was made flesh in Him during the Incarnation, He was the living example of what true witnessing is all about.

Jesus stressed this command because He knew it is the only way we can understand and know God. Doing what God commanded us to do brings us to the end and fulfillment of things. At the end of what God said is the assurance and testimony of His power, love, and respect.
