ALSO RECOMMENDED: HOMILY FOR THE 1ST SUNDAY OF LENT [YEAR B ]

We thank Holy Mother Church for giving us a time like this (THE LENTEN SEASON) to be used extensively for prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Child of God, another time of grace has come. Let us go nearer and closer to Jesus for purification and sanctification of life so that we will sin no more. This will eliminate sorrow as a result of sin and have it replaced with happiness forever.

Let us listen to the Gospel readings : Mark 1:12-15

“At that time: the spirit drove Jesus out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of God, and saying, “the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the Gospel.”

The above Gospel reading, helps us to see once again clearly in the life of Jesus , how the Spirit works, leads , defends , protects and gives VICTORY to his people in times of temptations, confusions and worries of life.

May l ask you, did Jesus ran away from the Devil ? NO ! Was Jesus afraid of satan and took shortcuts to avoid him? No ! So Child of God, let us learn and imitate Jesus by killing the spirit of fear and pessimism in us. Let us stand against the darkness and plans of the enemies today, knowing fully well that temptations must surely come, but just for a while. But with prayer, fasting, trust, perseverance and faith in God, who is always there for us, we shall be more than conquerors.

Lenten period is akin to the forty days Jesus used to prepare Himself through prayers and fasting to wage war against the evil one by shattering and scattering all the programmes and works of the satanic world.

Moreover, we can also see the importance and power of prayers which made Him a winner, in the midst of the wild beasts.
The Angels ministered to him
and he continued His mission, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God , for the repentance from sins and the fulfillment of time.

Let us imitate our Master Jesus and do the same always, especially during this Lenten season.

Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, you experienced what it is to be tempted and you won, help me and give me all the necessary Graces, l need to be faithful to you during this Lenten season. Open the eyes of my heart to see and help the poorer ones around me. Amen

Happy first Sunday of Lent and Happy new week in the journey of grace.

Always on my knees for you in prayer.

Your Rev. Sr Justine Oluchi Egbedike, Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco
