YEAR B: HOMILY FOR THE 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: CHOOSE THIS DAY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE

BY: Fr. Cosmas Ukadike CM

HOMILY:

In life there’s always a moment of sober reflection and decision making. This moment is greatly encouraged for children of God to observe from time to time, so as to reflect over their lives and make a renewal or take a decision towards God.

In today’s first reading, God’s word presents us with the renewal of the covenant which Joshua called the Tribe’s of Israel to make at Schechem.

Joshua took out time to recall to their minds all the marvelous deeds that God worked in their midst.

He reminded them of God’s unending love and faithfulness towards them. Urging them to reciprocate by choosing and serving only the true God (Joshua 24, 1-2; 15-18).

Is it possible for us now to take a moment and reflect over the activities of our lives?

Can you figure out any good work which God has done in your life?

Have you ever felt the hand of God at work in your family?

God needs your undivided attention. It is he alone that we must worship and serve.

In our own days God has sent someone greater than Joshua, his own son to us.

Jesus came to perfect this covenant which our forebears renewed, not by mere word’s of mouth or by blood of animals, but with his own body and blood.

He gave us this gift of his body and blood as real food and drink, so that we may become one with him.

Unfortunately, like we see in today’s Gospel, some of us find this teaching “a difficult one to accept”(John 6, 60).

But firm enough, Jesus did not change his stand just to satisfy his audience.

He was not afraid of losing numbers, for he was not after numbers, but after impacting the truth of the Gospel.

It is important that we teach and listen to the truth of the Gospel, not minding what people are saying.

Joshua did not compromise on the truth and neither did Jesus before his followers.

Even when many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him (John 6, 66). We pray for God grace to always stand for Jesus who is the Truth. And to constantly choose God above all else.

Happy Sunday And have a blessed week.
