YEAR B: HOMILY FOR THE 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
HOMILY THEME: EASY WAY TO GREATNESS

(Mk. 9:30-37) Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells the apostles who is the greatest in the Kingdom. That greatness is achieved by accepting children. Jesus refers not only to the acceptance of children who are in need of protection but also those who are child- like. The greatest in the Kingdom are those who have and accepts qualities of children like dependence, humility, and obedience.
We should imbibe the kind of dependence children exhibit before their parents and elders. In the same way that children knew their weakness without their guardians, we too must recognize our weaknesses without God. It is God who provides us with everything we need here on earth. No other can be better than God as a provider.
Next, we must also possess humility. In relation to dependence, we should be humble enough that no matter how rich, intelligent and powerful we are, we are still helpless in this world. We must recognize our limitations and confess to God our nothingness without His grace.
Lastly, like children, we must be obedient to God. We should know that God knows what we must do and how life should be lived. Although He gave us freedom, that freedom must be used in favour of obeying the Will of God. Jesus gave an example. He obeyed His father from the Incarnation up to His death on the cross. It shows that obedience to the Father’s Will is our best way to the resurrection, to salvation.
Physically we will grow. But let the children in us continue in terms of obedience, humility, and dependence . All of us were made to be great in God’s Kingdom. All of us were meant to belong to the Kingdom. All of use were meant to eternal life.
