YEAR B: HOMILY FOR THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: GOD CHOSE US IN CHRIST BEFORE THE WORLD WAS MADE

BY: Fr. Cosmas Ukadike C. M

HOMILY:

God’s word today presents us with a call by God to serve him for the rest of our lives. This call is special in that we were chosen even before we were born, not as against our wish, but as a pledge of God’s love to keep us for himself so as to be holy and spotless as his adopted children in Christ (Eph 1, 3-5). St Paul calls this a BLESSING and emphasized that God has chosen us in Christ to make us “praise the glory of his grace” (Eph 1,3). So this is our primary task as special children of God.

In the first reading of today we hear the prophet Amos responding to Amaziah the priest of Bethel, who tried to stop him from answering the call of God; to prophesy to his people and he simply replied him:

‘I was a shepherd, and looked after sycamores: but it was the Lord who took me from herding the flock and the Lord who said, “Go, and prophesy to my people Israel.”’(Amos 7, 15). Amos recognized his call to praise the glory of God’s grace by serving him as a prophet, even in the face of distractions, persecutions and discouragement he insisted on living out his vocation.

In the Gospel reading, Jesus sends out the twelve and gave them at the same time, authority to function; over the unclean spirits (Mark 6, 7).

Both in the calling and sending of the apostles, we discover that they were all at the discretion of Jesus. He would later remind them that they did not choose him, but rather he chose them (John 15, 16) so it is with us, we did not call ourselves; it is God who has called us in Christ. And as he called us, so he empowered us to proclaim the wonders of his love to all creation. Let us therefore live out our Christian calling for it is a mandate to praise the glory of God’s grace.

May our daily lives truly reflect a people chosen by God, whom God has taken for his own, to make his glory praised in our families and the society at large.

Happy Sunday And have a blessed week.
