My Morning Minute With Jesus
Jesus’ encounter with the blind man in today’s gospel is an encouraging teaching on prayer. Focus is at the heart of it. The blind man knew who Jesus was and what Scripture says of what God would do through him. So, he addressed him with the Messianic title, “Son of David.”

He did it persistently and with conviction as he made his prayer to this sure source of life for him as he pled: “have pity on me.” He prayed his way through a variety of obstacles and distractions: First obstacle was the stigma of blindness, seen, at that time, as the result of his sinfulness, as blindness was simply associated with the dark. Then of course came the persuasion by the people and crowds that both disparaged him and hushed him down because he should not be speaking out and disturbing the peace. Also, the lack of physical clarity in sight constituted another impediment. But he persistently shouted all the louder, “Son of David, Have pity on me.” Jesus heard him and addressed himself to the blind man with a simple question that would probably defeat many of us even today: “what do you want me to do for you.” Is there anyone of us who would not have had an endless list of scattered demands? The blind man was focused and single minded as he responded with faith, trust and certainty: “Master, I want to see.” Jesus answered his prayer. Do we have all these elements in our prayers? Are we ready to pray our way through obstacles and distractions? Are we focused and modest in our prayer requests?
Lord, Son of David; Have pity on us. Amen.
