HOMILY THEME: HAVING AN ENCOUNTER WITH GOD

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mt. 6:7-15) Thursday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time.

In the day’s Gospel Jesus give a teaching on prayer. It is really not about the number of words or length of time spent but the heart and mind put into it. It entails communicating with the Father. It consists in listening and speaking. In other words, it is having an encounter with God. Jesus told them what to say in prayer. He actually told the spirit, intention, and matter of prayer. When we pray we recognize our limitation and God’s power. We submit to God. We assume a position of dependence and trust. While we commit to give our best, we accept that it is God who runs the show. His will will always prevail.

There is nothing wrong with written or formula prayers as long as we mean what they say and say what we mean. Precisely, they became models of our prayer because they illustrate the perfect attitude and in prayer. Saints had captured the essence of communication with God. We hope to own and experience the same through their prayers.

But we can have our own. Equipped with a great love and faith in God, we can have the best prayer. Even total silence can be an effective prayer if it is merited by the circumstances. When praying to God, it is better for the heart to do the talking!
