YEAR B: HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: PARABLE OF THE NET

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mt. 13:47-53) Thursday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus explains the dynamics of the Kingdom of heaven. He used the analogy of casting the net into the sea to catch fish. It was a classic analogy specially for His crowd who were very familiar with fishing. The net will catch everything within its coverage. When the net is hauled, that is the time when fishermen will separate those which they need and discard those they do not need.

In the same way, the Kingdom of heaven welcomes everyone. On judgment day, those who are worthy will be welcomed and those who had been found wanting will undergo punishment for their sins.

This is God’s justice. We will be wrong if we think that we can get away with our sins. We will also be wrong if we think that we are doomed eternally if we are unworthy on judgment day. God is a loving God. Jesus died for ALL on the cross. While we had all been merited with the grace of salvation, we need to maintain to be saved. We cannot live as if our salvation will not be anymore taken away from us. Our sins will always separate us from God. On the other hand, even with our sins, heaven is not closed to us.

The ideal situation, therefore, is for us to live our baptism. In Baptism, we were given a new life. The grace of salvation merited for us by the Lord Jesus by His death on the cross is given to us. It is our task to fulfil that gift. If we do, we will be chosen for the Kingdom. If we fail, we still have chances in our lifetime though the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Hopefully we take heed of what the Lord had said.
