YEAR B: HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE 34TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: BE PREPARED

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Lk. 21:20-28) Thursday of the Thirty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus continues His warning on the end times. Lest we will be carried away, busy, and be drowsy with the concerns of the day, we may be caught flat-footed and be surprised at the coming of the Lord. The Lord wants us to be vigilant and pray fervently to be strong and faithful so as to weather the tribulations which precede judgment day.

The message still remains, i.e. We must be prepared. Part of that preparation is vigilance. Vigilance here does not necessarily mean being awake and on guard 24/7. That is impossible to do. Physically, at least, we can only be awake a certain number of days.

Further, the end times may not come soon. Vigilance is being spiritually ready in faith. It includes regular prayer, deep faith, being a peacemaker, exercising forgiveness, rendering charity, and all other Christian actions. It is hoping that when the Lord comes, He will see us as His own, worthy to enter into glory. The more important point is the truth of the coming of the Lord. The vigilant Christian is oriented towards that goal, a destiny, an end, an encounter with the risen Lord. Someone is coming. He is coming as He had once come on that silent and holy night. Our vigilance will not be in vain.
