HOMILY THEME: AVOID EVERY BIT OF ANGER, SETTLE DISPUTES AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mt. 5:20-26) Thursday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

In the day’s Gospel Jesus teaches His apostles to avoid every bit of anger and to settle disputes as best and early as they can. God does not want a revengeful and grudging heart. Prolonging the differences and lingering on the issues might lead to anger, and worse, murder. Jesus knew the human heart and it’s ways. Humans have that tendency to get even. Rather than toy with the feeling and risk aggravating the situation, settle the issue asap and move on.

Human life is of utmost importance to God. A person alive has almost limitless possibilities. Every person has something to contribute to this world. In the same way, when used sinfully, it can be devastating. That is the reason why Jesus would not want it endangered, much more, wasted. That must also be the reason why Jesus wanted to eliminate anger so that it can be lived for peace.

Anger is still a feeling. It means it is a natural human reaction. It is not a sin by itself. But when harbored, let alone allowed to linger, it can be deadly. When murder happens, there is a loss of life on one and a harrowing one for the other. In the end, Jesus wants us not to be a part of any anger which leads to killing. Human life must be treasured and protected. We do everything to preserve and realize it’s full potential.
