YEAR B: HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE ELEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY:

(Mt. 5:43-48) Tuesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

In the day’s Gospel, Jesus continues to give teachings on the radicality of the Christian Faith. He commands us to love our enemies and pray for those who hate us. This distinguishes a Christian from others who love only those who love themselves. Getting even is the order of the day for anyone who had been aggrieved.

As a proof of God’s encompassing, universal, unconditional, and salvific love, He meant to grace everyone, sinner or saint. Indeed, all creation are available to everyone, the sun, rain, wind, flora, and fauna. Furthermore, Jesus pointed out that Christians are known for their inclusivity and readiness to forgive. Catholicism is universalism. It seeks to add everyone to the fold. Jesus’s mission was to save everyone. Indeed, no one was lost. When He died on the cross, He died for everyone, past, present and for all time. His parables of the lost sheep, lost coin, and prodigal son attest to this.

The task to fulfill the mission is now in the Church and to every Christian. While justice is necessary, compassion should not be left out.
