YEAR B: HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE SIXTH WEEK OF EASTER

HOMILY THEME: THE CONTINUATION OF JESUS’ MISSION

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Jn. 16:5-11) Tuesday of the Sixth Week of Easter

In the day’s Gospel Jesus continues His farewell address to the disciples. He told them the reason why He was going. It will be an opportunity for the Spirit, the Advocate to come. Jesus’ mission was both done and not done. Done because He had consummated His mission. Not done because salvation will continue to be preached to everyone. This time, the Spirit will come and continue the work. Since the Gospel will be preached to all the world, the Spirit will be perfect to do the work.

If Jesus stayed, He will be limited by His physical body. Even if He bilocates, He can only cover certain grounds and so much people. This must be the reason why He had to leave and let the Spirit take over. With the Spirit, Jesus can be present anywhere at the same time. Prayers, celebrations, and Christian actions are guaranteed of Jesus’ presence if done IN THE SPIRIT. We all received the Spirit when we were baptized. In every situation, we summon the Spirit within us to motivate us. With the Spirit, Jesus is present in all the masses celebrated everywhere even if done at the same time.

The Spirit is, therefore, a manifestation of God’s presence. It is another fulfillment of God’s promise to be with us. We bid JESUS goodbye and was rightly sad for the separation. But it was temporary. In fact, it was replaced by the permanent presence of the Holy Spirit.
