YEAR B: HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE NINTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: HE IS NOT GOD OF THE DEAD BUT OF THE LIVING

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mk. 12:18-27) Wednesday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

In the day’s Gospel Jesus was questioned by the Sadducees regarding the truth of the resurrection. They gave Jesus a very difficult situation. Jesus was hard put to explain how a woman who married seven brothers one after another after each died, would relate with those seven husbands in the next life. It was a question regarding the truth and reality of the resurrection. The answer of JESUS was another classic. Marriage was not anymore the main matter in the next life. Much more, God is God of the living, not of the dead. The citing of Abraham, Jacob, and Isaac was an assertion that those who have died resurrected.

For what use is a God who rules on the dead? It is a good for nothing god. Being god over the dead does not need any challenge, prestige, and power. Our God is omnipotent and omnipresent. He is the Alpha and the Omega. Life is so precious for God for it to end in death. Just remember what He did? He gave His only Son who became one like us and died for us. If there is no resurrection, for what good were those saving actions?

We are Easter people. We are Christians because of the resurrection. If Christ did not resurrect, our faith is for nothing. We continue to do good, believe in the Lord, communicate with Him, and bear all the challenges and pains of following His commands, because of the resurrection.
