HOMILY THEME: JESUS INVITES US TO COME AND SEE

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY: (Jn. 1:35-42) Friday before Epiphany, January 4, 2019

In today’s Gospel two of disciples of John asked Jesus where He was staying. Jesus invited them to come and see. It was a loaded question. The disciples were not only interested where Jesus finds abode but also to know who Jesus was. Instead of describing His abode, Jesus invited them to come and see. Jesus wants them to experience for themselves who He was.

“Come and see!” These are action words to do something and take a close look. Jesus’ invitation was for the disciples to witness for themselves and not rely on others. While the view of others help, personal experience has no match. Jesus also invited them to come with Him. They did. They stayed with Jesus in order to have an opportunity to meet Jesus and follow Him. Having been satisfied with what they saw and experienced, Andrew went to his brother Simon and declared founding the Messiah!

The Church, Scriptures, and Traditions will give us vast information on Jesus and the faith He proclaimed. But it must be complimented with our own response to Jesus invitation to come and see where He is and who He is. A personal experience with Jesus is non-negotiable. We should be able to determine for ourselves His love, mercy, justice, generosity, and salvation. We do not only need an idea of Jesus. We need to meet Jesus.
