HOMILY FOR THE TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C (27TH SUNDAY)

HOMILY THEME: THE SILENCE OF GOD

BY: Fr A.N. Abiagom, CM

HOMILY: Hab 1:2-3, 2:2-4; 2 Tim 1:6-8, 13-14; Lk 17:5 – 10.

How does it feel to hear no voice of consolation and assurance when one desperately needs to hear such a voice especially from the divine realm in order to see a reason to keep on living?

Many people may not be bold enough to come out plainly to say that they not believe in the existence of God. But in reality, a lot of people today do not really believe that there is the God who listens to the supplications of the poor , the suffering and the depressed. In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus our Lord prayed to the Father that “If it be possible, the chalice or cup of suffering be taken away from Him.” What did the Father say? In the first reading from the Prophet Habakkuk, the lamentations seem to suggest the God who does not listen nor care about the plights and cries of the poor person who calls upon Him.

Hmmmm! When God silent, what could it mean? The silence of God is often the silence unto our own good. The silence of God is a call to deep faith in God even in the greatest moments of the blowing of the doubting wind. The gospel reading calls us to an authentic faith in God. We need the faith as little as a mustard seed to keep our heads high. The second reading encourages us to be courageous in our faith journey.

The silence of God is a call to surrender our will unto God. Not our will but the will of God be done. In the silence of God, we may pass through fire but we will be purified by it. In the silence of God, we may pass through deep waters but we will be washed clean by it.

The voice of prayer is never silent when made in faith and submission to the will of God. Though as humans we often do, but can we really tell God what to do and how to do it? We ought to submit to God in prayers after presenting our intentions and allow His will to be done because in His will is our peace.

Over two thousand years ago, the ‘Garden Gethsemane’ till this moment continues to receive millions of visitors from all over the world. Hmmmm! Was the Father really silent? If yes, it means that His silence made all things new and beautiful. O! the silence that redeemed the world through the blood that Jesus Christ shed on the Cross of Calvary.
