HOMILY: MISSIONARY SUNDAY

Dear Lord, I pray that I may love others with a Christ-like love and that I may show compassion on those who live in my neighbourhood.

HOMILY FOR THE XXIX SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C (29TH SUNDAY) – 16TH OCTOBER

HOMILY THEME: CONSISTENCE IN PRAYER OPENS THE GATE OF GOD’S BLESSINGS AND FAVOURS!

BY: Fr. NwaMary Francisco  Ulogu, HFFBY.

HOMILY: MISSIONARY SUNDAY

1st Reading: Exodus 17:8-13, Psalm 121:1-8, 2nd Reading: Timothy 3:14-4:2, Gospel Reading: Luke 18:1-8.

The Responsorial Psalm of today’s readings made it clear that OUR HELP is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

The Question we must ask is how can we get this our help from the Lord?

The psalmist gave us a practical answer of lifting up our eyes to the mountain, which is the house of God (Isaiah 2:3) and according to Jesus Christ in Mathew 21:13 is a place of prayer. Thus, lifting up our eyes to the mountain means praying to God who made heaven and earth.

In seeking for this help that comes from the Lord, Moses in the first reading lifted up his eyes and hands on the mountain throughout the day without ceasing (PUSH).

Moses was supported with stone and by Aaron and Hur, as a means of backup prayer partners, why Moses interceded for Joshua and his men on the Battle Field.

Still on how to get help from the Lord, Jesus Christ in the Gospel Reading taught us with an example on how to go about this.

For Him, if an unjust Judge could answer and favour a POOR WIDOW by granting her justice because she was persistence in “PUSH”, will our ever loving God who sent his ONLY SON (John 3:16), to come and die for us shamefully on the Cross at Calvary, even when we are still sinners (Romans 3:8), not answer, favour and bless us if we persisted in “PUSH”?

God is calling on us, like Moses and the Poor Widow to always come to Him and in His House to ask for our needs and cry to him without ceasing, even when it seems He is delaying!

Paul in the second reading pointed out that strong faith is also needed for us to get help from the Lord. Thus, he said, we must “keep to what we have been taught and known to be true” which are in the Scripture, the word of God.

Finally, the Gospel Acclamation (Hebrew 4:12), tells us more on how to get help from the Lord by saying that “The word of God is something alive and active; it can judge secret emotions and thoughts”, because the person that shall ascend the mountain for the Lord must have clean hands and pure in heart (Psalm24:3-6).

Shalom….. Be good!
