YEAR C: HOMILY FOR THE 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

HOMILY THEME: SEASON OF EXPECTATION

BY: Fr. Justin Nzekwe

HOMILY: The short journey of the period of Advent is coming to an end tomorrow, therefore today is a call for us to access ourselves and know how prepared and ready we are to welcome Christ into our life. Remember that we are looking forward to the birth of not just a king of a community or country, but a Universal king. Have you cleaned up the floors, tables and glasses of your heart in order to welcome the great visitor? Many have decorated their houses with Christmas tree, but have we decorated our hearts? Let that Christmas light shine forth from our hearts. Let is dispel the darkness of sin, so that the light of glory may shine.
The first reading of today highlights God’s way of doing things to us. Often, God chooses the poor, the weak, and the little. He does not look out on the perfect, because for him, it is only the sick that needs a doctor. He often chooses the poor and the weak in order to shame the strong. Unfortunately, human being chooses and values the strong, the big and the perfect. In first reading taken from the Book of Prophet Micah, God chose Bethlehem as the place from where the ruler of Israel shall be born, even though he was aware that Bethlehem is the smallest among the clans of Judah. God also chose Virgin Mary to be the mother of Jesus Christ. She was not a prominent woman, she was not rich, she was not from a royal family, yet God chose her in her loneliness.
We all are invited to a life of simplicity, humility, and to begin to see Christ in the little and everyday things. In today’s gospel, Mary blessed Elizabeth’s family with her simplicity and humility. She was blessed by the message of the angel and she decided to visit her cousin Elizabeth to share her joy with her. Sometimes we are so busy to have time for our relatives, our family members, and others. Mary’s visit brought joy to Elizabeth, that even the child in her womb leapt for joy on hearing the greetings of Mary.
However, in the spirit of the expectation of the birth of our savior Jesus Christ, we are invited to extend this joy to our neighbours, co-workers, strangers, and even the poor on the streets. For many times we have abandoned all these simple things looking for the complex ones. Let us join the psalmist of today to ask the Lord to bring us back once more to the right part of salvation, that we may be prepared to welcome the child Jesus.
