YEAR C: HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 1ST WEEK OF ADVENT
HOMILY THEME: INTRODUCTION OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD
BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon
(My. 15:29-37) Wednesday of the First Week of Advent
In today’s Gospel, we have the curing of the sick followed by the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves which led to the feeding of the multitude. This is more than just a miracle out of necessity to feed some hungry followers. Jesus took the opportunity to let the disciples and the people see His power and compassion. He came to heal bodies and souls. He came to introduce the Kingdom.
The curing and the miracle both served as strong signs of the Kingdom. They provided a foretaste of heaven. The first reading from the prophet Isaiah said it all: death will be destroyed, tears will be wiped away, veils will be removed, and salvation will be at hand! It will be a time of rejoicing. God came and saved His people.
Thus, it is important that we prepare ourselves. Advent is a time of spiritual preparation. It is about feeding our souls and not only our bodies. It is about mercy and compassion and not just about dole outs. It is about caring and loving and not just gift-giving. It is about salvation and not merely being physically fit and healthy.
