YEAR II: HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: “FOR HE (DAVID) APPEALED TO THE LORD AND HE GAVE HIM STRENGTH…” HE DEFIED EVERY ODD!

BY: Rev. Fr. Jacob Aondover ATSU

HOMILY: READINGS: SIRACH 47:2-11, PSALM 18, MARK 6:14-29

1).The human skull is said to be very strong not to be easily penetrated by a river stone. David’s stone however defied the odds of the thickness of the human skull. It broke Goliath’s skull!

2). David was just a child, his arms weren’t strong enough to swing his sling from a distance to the extent of piercing a human skull. He defied the odds; his swing was forceful enough to break Goliath’s skull.

3). In his early stages of life, when he tore lions and wolfs into shreds with his shepherd’s staff; a thing that was seemingly impossible. He defied such kind of odds all life-long.

4). “He (David), sang praise with all his heart, and he loved his maker”. Though king, he was not as power drunk and ungodly as Herod. He served God well and earned for himself the title – ‘a man after God’s heart’.

5). As a consequence of his fidelity, even when he fell into sin, God took it away, exalted his power forever and gave him a throne of glory.

6). We too, my friends, can defy the many odds working against us if we follow the example of David. We can do the impossible and achieve the unachievable if we ‘appeal to the Lord’ like David did.

7). Sometimes we just need to drop our challenges before God and he’d attend to same. We all have many Goliath’s troubling our family life, businesses, work, education, etc. We may want to APPEAL TO THE LORD so that he’d give us strength.

8). We may never want to imagine that we are too small or young to defy the many odds lined up against us. We may not want to think that our challenges are insurmountable. We may only like David, LOVE GOD AND PRAISE HIM WITH ALL OUR HEART and he’ll do the rest for us.

9). We may also want to be unlike Herod: wicked, inconsiderate, murderous, careless with oaths, taken easily to pleasure, etc. Rather, we may want to emulate David: God fearing, courageous, committed to prayer, kingly, etc.

10).We may kindly do well to FEED AND EDUCATE ONE POOR FOLK AROUND US TODAY.
