YEAR II: HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

HOMILY THEME: “DO NO BE AFRAID, JUST HAVE FAITH” (Mk. 5:36).

HOMILY: READINGS: 2SAMUEL 18:9-10.14.24-25.30; 19:3, PSALM 86, MARK 5: 21-43
These were Jesus’ to Jairus when the news of his daughter’s death was delivered to him. With the death of his daughter, his hope was lost, he must have been downcast and so wearied hence seeing him in this situation, Jesus the leader and perfecter of our faith (Heb. 12:2), quickly offered him hope, consoled and restored his lost faith.

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ what has always been our response to Jesus’ call of faith? Today we are reminded that he is our leader, the perfecter of our faith; and to back this up he shows us his power over protracted ailments and death. Like he said to Jairus, he is telling us: “Do not be afraid, just have faith”. He demands that we trust him and believe in him without any iota of doubt. He knows that fear is man’s greatest foe and exhorts us to conquer it with our faith in him.

What is it that has been your nightmare, always robbing you of your joy, inflicting pain and misery on you? What is your cause of worry and fear? Is it the long-suffering ailment that won’t leave you? Is it poverty, want or lack? Is it a fruitless search for a husband, wife, child, job etc.? May I challenge you to approach him with the kind of faith the woman with a flow of blood had; that if we as much as pray in faith to him, he’d answer us. May I exhort us to conquer our fears given that our master is Lord over everything; death and ailments.

I charge my beloved brethren from those parts of Nigeria who are victimized by the murderous, baleful and belligerent boko haram never to lose faith in God. Do not be afraid, just have faith! God will fight for us and we shall be victors soonest! As Absalom who threatened David’s life and kingship had his head clogged in the thick branches of the oak, so too will our aggressors be caught up in the evil schemes they set for us. God himself will fight for us if like David we remain men and women after his heart, always repentant of our evils. Amen.
