2ND SUNDAY HOMILY, YEAR B [LENT]

THEME: “THIS IS MY SON, THE BELOVED. LISTEN TO HIM “

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

We have entered into the 2nd Sunday of Lent. It’s very rare for a father to praise his son publicly. Often fathers criticize their sons before others. But God did not hesitate to call Jesus, “my beloved son.” This means that God is proud of Jesus as his son. These days, it’s difficult to see a father praising his son. The young men of today break the hearts of their fathers. They see the Biblical stories of Abraham and Isaac as unfounded and fictitious. Yet, Abraham is our father in faith. “God put Abraham to the test” (Gen. 22:1-2. 9- 13. 15-18), to sacrifice his only son whom he loved so much. Abraham obeyed but God provided the Lamb for the sacrifice.

In the same way, if we obey God’s commandments, he will hear our prayers and bless us as he blessed Abraham and his decendants. This is why Paul wrote to the Romans saying: “With God on our side who can be against us?”(Rom. 8:32-34). God is on our side when we obey and do his will. This season of Lent is a very nice opportunity for us to chesticize our bodies and uplift our souls. God wants us to follow his ordinances for our own good. We must be transfigured like Christ and excel in good works. This season of Lent offers us the opportunity to excel in all.

In doing so, we become the sons and daughters of God with whom he is well pleased. People would support us because we tell them the truth. We also have strong faith which spurs us on in doing good works of charity. We inspire others to embrace virtuous lifestyles by our good examples. With all these, God will surely address us with the same words: “This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him” (Mk. 9:2-10). May God bless us as we listen attentively to his beloved Son and feed on every word that comes from his mouth. Happy Lenten season.
