4TH SUNDAY IN ADVENT – HOMILY

THEME: Let It Be Done to Me

BY: Fr. Uchenna Onyejiuwa

Dearest brothers and sisters in Christ, for the past three weeks we have been praying and waiting in hope for the glorious coming of the Messiah promised us by God, our Lord Jesus Christ. The Messiah that was expected for centuries is just a day away from his arrival, God has indeed fulfilled the promise he made to his servant, David (2 Sam 7:16). A major player in this Divine – Human romance is the Blessed Virgin Mary, another important figure of the advent season, a woman whom God found worthy and through whom this Divine intercalation into human history became a reality (Lk 1:35). We must, therefore, give glory to God for His great wisdom and love for humanity (Rm 16:27).

Beloved friends, the lesson today is drawn from the person of our Blessed Mother Mary. Firstly, in her, God found a worthy place to dwell to bring salvation to the rest of mankind. As the infant Jesus comes tomorrow will He find your heart and home a fit dwelling place to bring joy, love and happiness to your neighbours and those you meet this season? If the answer is NO, then every preparation you have made for Christmas is incomplete and to that extent useless. Secondly, we all always get confused whenever we are presented with an issue that falls beyond the scope of our knowledge, which often leads us to either seek clarification or cast our doubts. Mary found herself in such a situation and asked for clarification. The explanation she got was unprecedented, which gave her every reason to doubt it but, instead, she accepted it, relying on her faith in God; needless to say that that expression of faith made our Christmas celebration possible.

My dear friends, although man is a bundle of possibilities there is always a limit to what he can do or know. This limitation is what necessitates his need for faith – faith in his Maker, faith in himself and faith in others. With faith and hard work, we can transcend our limitations and realize our full potential. You can say that faith is man’s way of living beyond his limits, especially his faith in God. Let us learn from this woman and begin today to build absolute trust in God because with Him nothing is impossible. May Christ’s coming bring all of us joy and happiness and may we be a channel of God’s love to others this season. Peace be with you. (First reading, 2 Sam 7:1-5,8-11,16; second reading, Rom 16:25-27; gospel, Lk 1:26-38).
